Are You So Scared You Never Visit The Dentist?

Friday, October 17th, 2008

If you are so scared of the dentist and your phobia is so strong that you never go then shame on you.  You should know that your fear is irrational and unnecessary because you see tons of people everyday that have been going to the dentist for years and they are all okay.

I want to let it be known before I go into this post that completely avoiding your dentist is 100% unacceptable and nothing something I condone in anyway. In this post I simply want to give those that still refuse to go to the dentist so tips that they can use to help them keep their teeth as healthy as possible despite not visiting the dentist.

If you never do visit the dentist then here are some tips that you can use to help you keep your teeth as healthy as possible without visiting the dentist.

1) Make sure you brush 3 times a day.  You need to brush a lot more if you don’t visit the dentist so plaque that toothbrushes can’t remove very well doesn’t build up. You should aim to brush after every meal.

2) Get an electric toothbrush.  An electric toothbrush by Sonicare should help you to keep your teeth cleaner than they could be from using any type of manual toothbrush.

3) Floss your teeth twice a day.  You need to aim to floss after breakfest and before you go to sleep.  It would also be helpful to floss after lunch.

4) Use mouthwash morning and night. Mouthwash can help you to eliminate any germs or bacteria that brushing and flossing doesn’t get.

5) Use a WaterPik 3-5 times a week. A WaterPik on top of everything else is the ultimate key to being able to avoid professional care for an extended period of time.  It helps you to get along the gum line where dentist are usually only able to get.

If you have a dental phobia and don’t go to the dentist then take my tips from above. I do however also think that you need to seek professional help about your phobia so that you can get over it and go to the dentist. The tips above will not allow you to avoid the dentist forever but are merely a way to delay the process or let you avoid needing to visit your dentist every 6 months.

Explaining Fear of The Dentist

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

A phobia is defined as some type of irrational behavior that involves avoidance or the situation or thing that is causing the fear. In terms of a dentist a phobia is irrational and unnecessary fear that causes someone to either avoid the dentist or experience an unnecessary amount of fear when they do visit the dentist.

In a lot of cases dental phobias are so bad that the people with the phobia do not even wish to speak of dentist even if the don’t have have to go back for another 6 months. It’s a mental thing and even the thought of a dentist gets under their skin.

Fear of the dentist can be broken down into three different categories.  The first is dental anxiety.  Dental anxiety is generally considered a fear of the unknown.  This could be caused by visiting a new dentist or going in for a new procedure that you haven’t experienced yet.

The second type of dental fear is dental actually “dental fear”. Dental fear is the natural reaction that many people have related to going to the dentist.  It is not as extreme as a phobia and most people who have a dental fear visit the dentist anyone and just gut it out.

The third and final type of dental fear is a dental phobia.  People with a dental phobia are generally so scared that they avoid the dentist at all cost.  Their fear is often unsubstantiated and unnecessary. In most cases the person is so scared that they will get physically sick if they have to go to the dentist.

That is quick rundown of the different types of fear of the dentist.  If you fall into one of these three categories then stick around and I will do my best to try to help you feel better about visiting your dentist and getting the dental care you need.
